Santa Claus, also known as Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas, Saint Nick, Kris Kringle, or simply Santa, is a legendary character originating in Eastern Christian culture who is said to bring children gifts on Christmas Eve of toys and candy or coal or nothing, depending on whether they are “naughty or good“. He is said to accomplish this with the aid of Christmas Elves, who make the toys in his workshop at the North Pole, and flying reindeers who pull his sleigh through the air. The modern character of Santa is based on traditions surrounding the historical Saint Nicholas, the English figure of Father Christmas and the Dutch figure of Sinterklaas.

Santa is generally depicted as a portly, jolly, white-bearded man, often with spectacles, wearing a red coat with white fur collar and cuffs, white-fur-cuffed red trousers, red hat with white fur, and black leather belt and boots, carrying a bag full of gifts for children. He is commonly portrayed as laughing in a way that sounds like “ho ho ho“. On the evening of Christmas Eve he gets on his sleigh pulled by flying reindeers and goes from house to house to bring presents, all kept in a huge sack, to the children. To enter the houses, he goes down from the chimney, then emerges into the fireplace, and leaves the gifts under the Christmas Tree. During the rest of the year he is involved in the construction of toys with Mrs. Claus and her elven helpers. Closely related to the representations of Santa Claus are those of the Russian character of Grandfather Frost (Ded Moroz), who brings gifts to children and is dressed in a blue coat. He is helped by his blonde Granddaughter (Sneguročka), holds a long scepter and her sleigh is pulled by 3 horses instead of reindeers. He brings the presents on December 31st and his residence is in Veliky Ustyug in Russia.

This figure is present throughout the ex-Soviet bloc and only recently, perhaps to make it uniform with Santa Claus, is he represented with a red jacket and fur boots. Much of Santa Claus iconography appears to derive from the figure of Ded Moroz, especially through his German equivalent Väterchen Frost. Due to some decidedly out of the ordinary traits of Santa’s behavior (such as the ability to deliver, in a single night, gifts to all the children of the world who believe in him by flying on a sled, to slip into chimneys and to entering through the fireplace even in houses without fireplaces, the alleged immortality and the possession of flying reindeers), his actions are also explained by the use of magic. Santa Claus and his Woodland Friends Statue sizes: 8.25 inches / 21 cm x 5.75 inches / 14.5 cm x 10.5 inches / 26.5 cm.
